Melbourne’s wet finish to September has played havoc with the Victorian Senior Open at Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links in what has been a testing two days for competitors.

Round one was interrupted by a 45 minute suspension of play as ground staff & volunteers worked tirelessly to remove the surface water from the greens.

In the end the rain was too persistent and a halt to play was called for the morning players.

The rain stopped soon after and with all hands on deck, it didn’t take long to have the course ready for play once again.

The afternoon field started roughly 45 minutes late and things were looking good for a completion of round one only for a large rain cell to hit again and bring a premature end to the day with the majority of the PM field having four holes to complete.

Play restarted on Friday at 7:15am and Terry Price put the finishing touches on a solid round of 71 (even par) to take the outright lead.

Price has had a great time in Victoria with three wins from five events before the Victorian Senior Open and he also took out the Patersons Victorian PGA Legends Bonus Series which was decided by his aggregate score across each of the rounds.

David Good who had his 15th career hole in one on the 204 meter second joined Mike Ferguson and former Australian cricket great Dean Jones in a tie for second along with a score of 72.

With play in fours for the second round, Jones who has had many exciting moments on the cricket field was looking forward to being in the thick of the action with three of Australia’s finest.

“It should be a lot of fun out there, to play with three of the big guns of the Legends Tour and guys that have won events all over the world will be a lot of fun” Jones said

Jones started solidly in round two and actually went to equal leader after seven holes when he holed a 30 footer from the edge of the green to jump into a three way tie with David Good and Terry Price.

Good bounced back with a fine birdie on the next hole to take back the lead heading into the final 9 holes of the tournament.

Jones and Price both started the back nine with birdies and after the 12th hole there were three tied for the lead heading into the final 6 holes of the tournament.

With the lead changing several times over the next few holes Good and Price stood on the 18th tee tied for the lead. Jones had dropped back to 2 behind after bogeying 13th and 15th holes.

Good split the 18th fairway after Price had pulled his tee shot into the trees which forced him to lay up for his next shot.

Goods approach shot to 10 feet was all that was needed to secure the Championship with a closing par to finish one shot ahead of Price.

In accepting the winner’s trophy, Good said that it was an honour to win the Senior Open, after previously winning two Tasmanian Senior Open trophies.
